So How Long Did the Mayan Civilization Last?

History deserves study and our attention. More than anything else, it is there for our instruction and serves as a constant reminder of what we have done right and we have done so terribly wrong. Even though there is absolutely no chance that we would get a completely accurate picture of history, it is still important that we learn from it. And the blanks and missing pieces? We must never relent from finding out about it an discovering whatever we could of the past that has been chiefly responsible for who and what we are today.

I consider myself a student of history. The past and everything that it offers holds an endless fascination for me, and I could not seem to get enough of reading about it and studying it. My interest about history is a little varied, as I love reading and finding out about different cultures and how they developed and flourished through time. Ancient and modern history provides me with equal fascination and wonder, and I try to study equally.

My current interest is all about the ancient Mayan civilization that flourished in the Southern Mexican states and all the way to the northern Central American region that is today the countries of Guatemala, Belize, and parts of El Salvador and Honduras. My interest is not just based on the buzz about the supposed end of the world later this year, supposedly based on the Mayan calendar. I am genuinely interested in the whole civilization, what it was able to achieve and its influence on others.

The Mayan Civilization and Its Extent

For all the interesting things that I drew me to study and learn about the Mayan civilization, what I really wanted to know was how long did the Mayan civilization last? When did it all start and how long did it manage to last before the European colonizers eventually came along? Those are interesting questions indeed that I searched the answers for.

The civilization of the Mayas is a Mesoamerican civilization that finds distinction in that it is the only pre-Columbian civilization in the Americas that had a fully developed written language. It is also very well known for its art, architecture, as well as its astronomical and mathematical systems.

The Mesoamerican chronology states that the extent covered by the civilization of the Mayas covers several distinct periods. Earliest of those periods is known as the Early Pre-Classic Mayan period that lasted from 1800 to 900 B.C. Right next would be the Middle Pre-Classic Mayan period that lasted from 900 to 300 B.C. and then after that period came the Late Pre-Classic Mayan period from 300 B.C. to 250 A.D. After that came the Classic period, which is divided into the following: Early Classic, from 250 to 600 A.D.; Late Classic from 600 to 900 A.D.; and the Post Classic period that was from 900 to 1500 A.D. And then came the colonial period, which could be said to have officially started in 1697, when the last Maya states fell to the Spanish. All in all the Mayan civilization could be said to have lasted approximately 3,497 years.
